Bobby Tambling: Chelsea scoring legend dies aged 84

Chelsea legend Bobby Tambling has died at the age of 84.

The striker held Chelsea's scoring record for 45 years until his total of 202 goals was surpassed by Frank Lampard in 2013.

Tambling helped Chelsea to win the 1965 League Cup and also featured for Crystal Palace. He won three caps for England, scoring one goal against France.

Tambling made a goal-scoring debut for the club at 17 in 1959. He went on to make a total of 370 appearances for the Blues and played in the 1967 FA Cup final, which Chelsea lost to Tottenham Hotspur.

He finished his playing career in Ireland, where he went on to manage Cork Celtic and Cork City. He lived in Cork until his death.

In 2013, speaking after breaking Tambling's scoring record, Lampard said: "Bobby and his wife have been a huge support to me throughout, Kerry Dixon as well, the two players I've managed to jump over.

"Bobby's an absolute gentleman. I'm looking forward to sitting down and having a beer or a glass of wine and having a proper chat with him for half an hour because he's supported me all the way. I couldn't have beaten a better man."
